Why a New Laser Protective Window Gets Dirty Again

Replacing a dirty protective window can be necessary, but repeated contamination deserves a closer look before you order another batch. The useful questions are: when did the new window become dirty, which surface was affected, and what happened between installation and inspection?

A repeated mark is an observation, not a diagnosis. The BOCHU fault example and BM111 manual below describe different, model-specific inspection routes. A technician must establish which, if any, applies to the installed head.

This guide helps maintenance and purchasing teams turn a repeat problem into a clear inspection record and an accurate replacement request. Before inspecting optics, stop the machine and follow its specified isolation and maintenance procedure. Opening and servicing the cutting head should be handled by appropriately trained personnel.

Start with when the contamination appeared

“The lens failed again” is difficult to investigate. A short timeline is more useful. Record whether the mark was noticed before installation, during the first approved production checks, or after an operating period. Include the date, machine and cutting-head model, material, cutting program, assist gas, and any alarm message.

Use observations that another person can verify:

Observation to record Useful evidence to retain
A mark was visible before the window was fitted Package label, part code and a clear photograph taken without touching the optical surface
The window was clean at installation but marked soon afterwards Installation time, first inspection time, work performed and the maintenance record
The same problem returned after more than one replacement A separate identity and operating-interval record for each replacement
A damaged window had previously been removed The earlier failure report and which areas were inspected or serviced afterwards

Describe the visible mark precisely—such as a white spot, residue, scratch or crack—and let the technician establish whether it is a burn or another condition.

Check the route by which contamination could return

BOCHU's official note on white spots on the upper surface of a lower protective window lists three possible causes: dust introduced during replacement, contamination between the lower and second-lower windows after an earlier window was penetrated, and failure of the lower drawer's seal. Use this specific example to frame questions for the applicable head's service procedure. See the BOCHU service note.

Before ordering, ask the maintenance team whether the holder, sealing arrangement and relevant internal area were checked under the correct service procedure. Record each component identified for replacement separately, including any seal required alongside the window.

Gas quality is another separate line of investigation. The Raytools BM111 V1.0 manual, section 3.2.2, warns that hydrocarbons and water vapour in cutting gas can damage the lens and affect the cutting result. Ask the responsible technician to compare the gas supply and maintenance records with the requirements for the installed machine. Use the specifications for the installed head; the manufacturer-hosted BM111 manual is the reference for BM111.

Separate a window replacement from a holder or seal repair

A protective window, its cartridge or holder, and its seals are different items. The BM111 V1.0 manual, section 6.2.1, addresses the lens, holder and sealing ring separately, including replacement of a damaged elastic seal. Specify which of these components the service inspection requires before placing the order.

For BOCHU equipment, the lower protective-window range and lower protective-lens cartridge listing are separate purchasing routes. Check the full entry and stated contents of the required component, including whether a window or seal is supplied with a cartridge.

Treat cleaning and replacement as separate maintenance decisions. Have the technician assess damage and determine whether cleaning is appropriate under the current instructions for the installed head and optic.

Give maintenance and purchasing the same replacement record

Use the event record above and add the head manufacturer and full model, the component position, and the exact item identified by service: window, holder/cartridge or seal. Keep every printed part number and suffix, with its listed dimensions and model conditions. Record the quantity and selling unit from the current offer.

For a Raytools window, compare this record with the full Raytools protective-lens part-number table. Keep both identifiers when a row lists two codes, and confirm the complete specifications and conditions alongside the diameter.

Use the protective-lens catalogue to locate the brand or product family, then confirm the complete identity and conditions on its product page.

Keep the result of the next replacement useful

Record which identified part was fitted and what other service work was completed. After the machine has been returned to service under its prescribed checks, record the outcome against the same job or operating conditions where practical.

If the problem returns, send that record to the machine or head service provider. Log every component changed so the next comparison has a clear service history. For a purchasing identity check, send LASER STORE the complete part information and photographs; a part-identification enquiry should remain separate from a technical diagnosis of the machine.

Two common questions

Is there a fixed number of days a protective window should last?

Follow the inspection schedule and acceptance criteria specified for your equipment, and retain your own operating history. If contamination returns sooner than usual, have the cause investigated and review the maintenance schedule against the equipment instructions and findings.

Should I order a different size if the same window keeps getting dirty?

Only if the correct replacement identity has been established for the installed head. Repeated contamination alone does not establish that another diameter, thickness, rating or part-number suffix is compatible. Resolve the cause and the replacement identity as two related questions.
